Journey fans might get a surprise on the band’s final tour. Keyboardist Jonathan Cain hinted that former frontman Steve Perry could make a guest appearance during the upcoming trek, which kicks off later this month.
In a chat with Ultimate Classic Rock, Cain revealed that guitarist Neal Schon has already floated the idea to Perry. “Neal already asked,” Cain said. “And he says he’s thinking about it. I hope he comes out. It’s never too late. We’ve got 100 shows, so he’s welcome at any one of them.”
While nothing is set in stone, Cain stayed cautiously optimistic. “He didn’t say no, leave it at that,” he added.
Perry, of course, was the voice behind Journey’s biggest hits, leading the band from 1978 to 1987 and again in the mid-’90s. Outside the group, he’s released several solo albums, most recently 2021’s Seasons.
Since 2007, Filipino singer Arnel Pineda has carried the torch as Journey’s frontman. Despite recent legal issues back home, Cain reassured fans that Pineda will be “fine” for the tour, dubbing him “a singing machine.”
This farewell run comes after some confusion in October, when a late-night tweet from Schon suggested Cain might step back to focus on his ministry work. Both Cain and Schon later clarified that he’ll remain committed to Journey for the next couple of years.
The door may still be open for Perry, but either way, Journey’s farewell trek will be a triumphant send-off for one of rock’s most iconic bands.
