José Gonzalez announces first new album in four years

Swedish artist José González announced his first new album in four years, Against the Dying of the Light. His fifth studio LP is coming out on March 27 via Mute Records.

González released the title track with an accompanying music video today. Listen below:

The cozy, surreal music video for "Against the Dying of the Light" was directed by González's longtime friend and collaborator Fredrik Egerstrand. In the lyrics for the acoustic ballad, the musician seems to clap back at the new technology killing our internal light. According to the artist, the track is:

"[A]bout accepting who we are and what led us here, since the past can’t be changed. Then, about refocusing our attention on the challenges ahead, like pervert incentives and algorithms that aren't in line with human flourishing. Even though natural selection led us here, we don’t have to do what is in the gene’s best interest. And even though cultural evolution led to our societies, we don’t have to keep all the narratives if they drag us down."

González's previous effort, Local Valley, was released in September 2021. The track "Pajarito", released last year, is also on the new album's tracklist.
