Jolie Laide – the band consisting of singer-songwriter Nina Nastasia, Jeff MacLeod, Clinton St. John, and Morgan Greenwood – have announced their second album. Creatures, out April 30 via Victory Pool Records, follows the group's debut self-titled album from 2023.
With the news comes first single, "No Shape I Know". Listen below:
Of the new track, St. John says:
"[This song] takes place in a holding cell in a not too distant dystopian future. Those in the cell are at odds with accepting that their inaction led them to this place. Their overloads are always watching, listening – a looming threat."
On their debut record, Jolie Laide was really a duo between Nastasia and MacLeod, but quickly after the release they joined forced with St. John and Greenwood, and got to work on a follow-up.
Nastasia and MacLeod originally met decades earlier, when MacLeod's band The Cape May wrapped up recording with the late great Steve Albini at Albini's studio. Nastasia – who worked with Albini on each of her solo records – was next in line for the studio. This kismet, many years later, led to the formation of Jolie Laide.
Nastasia is also known for a robust and revered solo catalog, starting with 2000's Dogs and including her most recent album, Riderless Horse, which came after a 12-year absence that was marked with personal hardship.
