Jill Scott, one of neo-soul's true titans, hasn't released an album since 2015's funky and underrated Woman, which isn't quite as long ago as Erykah Badu's Return of the Ankh (that was 2010, though she did drop a cool "Hotline Bling"-themed mixtape in 2015) or the late, great D'Angelo's Black Messiah (2014) but it nevertheless has been a whole damn decade.
Her hiatus was mostly spent acting (The First Wives Club, Love Beats Rhyme) but a return to music is extremely welcome — she was, after all, fire as one of the Roots Picnic festival headliners in 2024.
The hiatus finally ends on February 13th when her sixth studio album To Whom This May Concern drops.
“Finally my new album entitled TO WHOM THIS MAY CONCERN drops Feb. 13th!!!! PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE and THANK YOU for your patience and your listening ears,” Scott wrote in an Instagram post. She also posted that “Creating takes a village. I’m sharing my beautiful people most literally.”
That means she brought the features: Tierra Whack, J.I.D., Ab-Soul, and Too $hort all guest on the album, and producers include ex-Frank Ocean collaborator Om'Mas Keith, the legendary DJ Premier, Trombone Shorty, and more. It also means the first single is called "Beautiful People," which you can listen to below. It's kind of psychedelic.
You can also peep the brazen and awesome NSFW cover art.
