Glasgow's Jill Lorean is trying to start a 'Peace Cult'

Glasgow-based artist Jill O'Sullivan has today shared details of the second album from her Jill Lorean project, to be released on 15 November via Monohands Records.

Peace Cult finds the former Sparrow & The Workshop frontwoman strengthening her collaboration with Andy Monaghan of Frightened Rabbit, who recorded, mixed, and produced the record, as well as playing on it and collaborating with O'Sullivan on the artwork. The emphasis this time around is more on Jill Lorean as a band, rather than a solo project. Drummer Peter Kelly completes the trio, co-writing all of the songs.

While the music on Peace Cult is more expansive and finely detailed than could be heard on the first Jill Lorean album, This Rock, O'Sullivan says there was a purposeful restraint to her vocals this time around. Writing in a press release, she adds:

"We took a step back and there were a few things I did that were different this time around. I wanted to sit back a little and not scream so much. I wanted to sing with more control, so whenever I felt like I wanted to push my voice out, I found a way to hold it back.”

The album announcement follows the release of first single "Crushing the Campsies" (inspired by the view from Glasgow's Queens Park) and comes along with a new track, "Rainmaker". Watch the video, made by Monaghan, below:

For those who don't know O'Sullivan, check out her work as a member of Three Queens in Mourning, who released a collaborative album with Bonnie 'Prince' Billy back in 2020. Earlier this year, O'Sullivan lent her vocals to two tracks from Scottish duo Afterlands' debut album, We Are the Animals in the Night. Listen to "Whale Song" and "Ghosthouse" on Bandcamp. She is also a member of Glasgow-based female and non-binary collective Hen Hoose, and features on their recent EP2 together with The Anchoress, Karine Polwart, Kathryn Williams, Carla J Easton, and more.
