Jeff Bridges is releasing his long-lost, 70's-era recordings

The Dude himself, Jeff Bridges, has announced an upcoming album salvaged from a 70s-era cassette tape. The never-before-heard songs were recorded by the actor and his close high school friends, and is set for release this Record Store Day, April 12.

Slow Magic, 1977-1978 is a collection of songs pulled from a semi-decayed cassette tape, simply labeled "July 1978", found within the actor's personal archives. The recordings were done roughly around the time Bridges completed work on the 1976 remake of King Kong – a film that serves as inspiration for a few titles sprinkled throughout the tracklist.

The title track was recorded in a rented warehouse out in Venice, CA, where film composer Ken Lauber helped throughout the sessions. The album itself consists of jam sessions with Bridges on vocals, Stan Ayeroff and David Greenwalt on guitars, Matthew Bright on bass, and Steve Baim on drums. Further collaborators are described as various "LA oddballs", including members of Oingo Boingo and Burgess Meredith, who is featured on several spoken-word tracks.

Bridges has also released the LP's first single "Obnoxious", described by Light in the Attic as "a portal to a hidden world of outlandish creativity and camaraderie in 1970s Los Angeles." The sound and lyrics are certainly evocative of the era; it's at least 70s enough to drop lines about doing Quaaludes within the first 30 seconds. Check out the full track right here:

The physical release will include all of the previously unreleased recordings, on a transparent blue vinyl LP (exclusive to Record Store Day 2025). These editions will also include a booklet with never-before-seen photographs, liner notes by LA author Sam Sweet, and a brand new interview with Jeff Bridges. Additionally, filmmakers Isaac Gale, Paul Lovelace, and Ben Wu are teaming up to produce a series of upcoming short documentaries involving Slow Magic's production, with a Spring 2025 release date.
