Jay Som, the longtime project of songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer Melina Duterte, has announced her new album Belong. It will arrive on October 10th via Polyvinyl.
To mark the announcement, Jay Som has released a music video for new single "Float", featuring Jimmy Eat World's Jim Adkins on vocals, plus a visualizer for another track, "A Million Reasons Why".
You can watch and listen to both below:
“This song is about desperately trying to hold on to past versions of yourself for self preservation, " Duterte says about "Float". "The fear of the unknown is so overwhelming that sometimes the best solution is to sit with it instead of fighting or running from it.” Adkins adds, “Melina is an absolute professional in all aspects of music creation. I am honored she had space in her vision for me to contribute. And it was a lot of fun to work on. Great song!“
Belong features a fresh influx of collaborators Duterte met on the road, including Joao Gonzalez (Soft Glas), Lexi Vega (Mini Trees), Steph Marziano (Bartees Strange, Cassandra Jenkins) and Mal Hauser (a collaborator to Mk.gee and Illuminati Hotties). Jim Adkins isn't the only pop punk royalty to chip in, either – the track "Past Lives" features Paramore's Hayley Williams.
Duterte had this to say, on embracing a more collaborative MO in the album project:
“When you try something for the first time, you’re always going to hold some type of fear, but I had to come to terms with the fact that I had to let go of some control. This record is essentially still me, but a lot of choices were made by friends who helped me, because I trusted them.”
