After nearly four years, Michelle Zauner's Japanese Breakfast is back with their fourth album. For Melancholy Brunettes (and sad women) is out 21 March via Dead Oceans. The new LP was produced by Blake Mills and is the Philly band’s follow up to their 2021 Grammy-nominated album Jubilee.
Along with the announcement, the band has released lead single “Orlando in Love”, along with a lyric video starring Zauner. Fans may recognize “Orlando in Love”, as Zauner and company have been performing it intermittently since 2023.
A press release had this insight on the new single:
"[It is] a riff on John Cheever’s riff on Orlando Innamorato, an unfinished epic made up of 68 ½ cantos by the Renaissance poet Matteo Maria Boiardo — the hero is a well meaning poet who parks his Winnebago by the sea and falls victim to a siren’s call, his 69th canto (even in the lofty realm of classical myth Zauner has a soft spot for innuendo)."
Zauner spent the last year living in Seoul, South Korea to learn Korean and write her second book. Her memoir, Crying in H Mart, was published in 2021 by Alfred A. Knopf and spent 55 weeks on The New York Times best-sellers list. It is also currently in development to be turned into a feature film, directed by filmmaker and actor Will Sharpe.
Japanese Breakfast will also head out on tour this later this year, making stops through the United States and select countries in Europe. Check out the tour dates and For Melancholy Brunettes (and sad women) tracklist below. You can preorder the album here.
