Horsegirl is back with one last taste of their new album, Phonetics On and On. The new single is called "Frontrunner", and it's got a brand new music video directed by (and starring) the band themselves. Phonetics On and On is out this Friday, February 14 via Matador Records.

The band has also announced a North American Summer tour. Tickets for this tour will be available starting Friday, February 14 at 10AM local time. The tour will start in Chicago on February 22, and finish in Denver on August 26. Horsegirl will be supported on tour by Lifeguard, Answering Machines, Free Range, and godcaster, as well as a co-headlining show with Sweeping Promises.

Horsegirl consists of best friend trio: Nora Cheng, Penelope Lowenstein, and Gigi Reece. The music video for "Frontrunner" depicts Cheng, Lowenstein, and Reece searching for each other in various locations in their hometown of Chicago; driving around, roaming the streets, hanging out at subway stations, etc. Their paths constantly meet, yet they keep missing each other.

The song leads us through scenes of girlhood and romance. Lowenstein sings tenderly about laying in bed with a loved one and counting down the seconds on a clock for them to come back home in the evening:

“In the morning / When you’re sleeping / I can’t wait and I can’t wait to compromise / In the morning / When you’re sleeping - I can’t wait and I can’t wait.”

Produced by Cate Le Bon and recorded at The Loft in Chicago, Horsegirl’s original and sonic home, Phonetics On and On explores the limits of the trio configuration— what if instead of filling out songs with distortion, they utilized the expanse that the three of them didn't occupy? This question is the guiding force behind the record, and the songs are a testament to experimenting with space and texture while maintaining a pop song at the core. It’s an album to dance to, as Reece’s dancing drum melodies and Lowenstein’s bright guitar leads direct your attention to the band’s chemistry and mastery of form.
