Harry Styles, who just announced his new album Kiss All the Time. Disco, Occasionally., said in an interview yesterday that this new effort was inspired by Brooklyn legends LCD Soundsystem.
If you listen to the lead single from this new album, "Aperture", it does make some sense. The track is a slow-building dance ballad, with synths and drum machines that could surely fit in one of LCD's hits. Styles, of course, is unable to emulate the uninterested affection in James Murphy's voice, but that's besides the point – his vocal performance is good nonetheless.
Last night, just after the single was officially released, Styles gave an interview to BBC Radio 1's Greg James about what inspired the new album, his fourth solo record. He says Kiss All The Time. Disco, Occasionally. is an album of "just classic pop songwriting," but also one that highlights his experiences of being an audience member again, after performing for so many years – especially when going out dancing, or at a LCD Soundsystem show.
"It's so joyous when you're watching them be so immersed in it", he says of Murphy and company. "The inspiration from them came of, like, 'Oh, that's how I wanna feel when I'm onstage,' and that led to the kind of music I was making." Watch the full interview below.
Kiss All The Time. Disco, Occasionally. is out March 6 via Erskine Records Limited.
