It's only been a month since Halsey dropped her Britney Spears-interpolating single "Lucky" and swiftly encountered some decidedly mixed reactions. Still, like the song or loathe it, with today's big reveal that her new album The Great Impersonator is a concept piece exploring multiple timelines across different decades and musical styles, what Halsey's trying to do with "Lucky" does start to make a little more sense.
In a 90-second clip announcing the album, the alt. pop artist is seen trying on different looks and musical styles as the decades whizz backwards, while a voiceover explains where the idea for "a confessional concept album" came from.
Referencing her recent diagnoses with lupus and a rare T-cell disorder, she says:
"I really thought this album might be the last one I ever made. When you get sick like that, you start thinking about ways it could’ve all been different. What if this isn’t how it all went down? 18-year-old Ashley becomes Halsey in 2014. What if I debuted in the early 2000s? The '90s? The '80s? The '70s? Am I still Halsey every time? In every timeline? Do I still get sick? Do I become a mom? Am I happy? Lonely? Have I done enough? Have I told the truth? I spent half my life being someone else. I never stopped to ask myself: Is this a person you’re proud to leave behind? Is it even you?"
From the short clip in the video, we can gather that Halsey's next single "Ego" is from her imagined '90s debut, landing somewhere between Alanis Morissette and Avril Lavigne.

Halsey is keeping tight-lipped about exactly when The Great Impersonator will be released, other than we know it will be at some point this year, and that the album cover reveal seems to be coming next week. For fans who really must know now, a short note in the YouTube description invites them to text her for more information.
"Ego" will be the fourth single from the album, following "The End", "Lucky", and "Lonely is the Muse". Watch a live performance of "Ego" below, filmed at London's KOKO earlier this month.
