HAAi shares new song "Satellite" along with second album reveal

Alan Pedder

Almost exactly 3 years from the release of her debut album Baby, We're Ascending, London-based Australian producer, songwriter, and DJ Teneil Throssell – aka HAAi – has shared a new single "Satellite" along with news of album #2, HUMANiSE, arriving in the fall.

It's the third new HAAi track to be taken from the upcoming release and features the return of two previous collaborators, electronic music trailblazer Jon Hopkins and vocalist Obi Franky, who wrote the lyrics following the death of her father. "Sometimes being reminded someone’s energy is there is enough to keep you going," says Franky in a press release. "We are all satellites and have the power to create a sense of unity, the power to receive and give what ultimately a human wants – love."

Also featuring on "Satellite" are multimedia artist/producer ILĀ and TRANS VOICES, the UK's first professional trans+ choir co-founded by ILĀ in 2022, who also contribute to two other tracks from the upcoming record.

Says Throssell of the new single:

"‘Satellite’ encapsulates everything HUMANiSE stands for: the importance of your people and the unique humaneness we offer one another in a rapidly changing world. I feel so lucky to have shared this track with Jon and Obi, ILĀ and TRANS VOICES. This album is for my trans and queer family and our allies, to say thank you for lighting up every space you’re in. I will always be in your army."

As the title suggests, HUMANiSE finds HAAi leaning into a more vulnerable space, drawing on her roots as a songwriter and wanting to use her voice more in the music. "Throughout the album, I kept thinking about a machine with a human heart," says Throssell of her overall vision, adding: “It took a long time to get there, it’s such a vulnerable thing to do. But for this album, it was important for me to allow this ‘human heart’ to be front and centre.”

Other guests on the album include Hot Chip's Alexis Taylor, rapper KAM-BU, artist Kaiden Ford, poet James Messiah, and a gospel choir. KAM-BU also appeared on a reworking of the HAAi/Jon Hopkins collab "Baby, We're Ascending", released exclusively through HAAi's acclaimed DJ-Kicks compilation in 2023.
