K-pop superstars aespa (에스파) have dropped a new remix collection today featuring a reworking of their recent single "Supernova" by Grimes. Writing on Twitter earlier this week, the Canadian producer credited her new "autistic hyper fixation" on K-pop for getting her back into producing music, saying:
"I normally don't do remixes but I could not resist messing with this accapella even tho the original production on this song is undefeatable. I went back to cyber twee for this and even had [Angelfire] sit behind me and stop me every time I tried to overthink the production so... It's very grimesy."
Posting on Instagram shortly before the release, she added: "I know I changed the hook but I was so shook by the lyric 'bring no light of a dying star' that was casually hidden in there. Felt like it needed a moment."
Grimes says she also remixed (but never submitted) the aespa track "Armageddon", and had worked up another version of "Supernova" that's now "unmixable" because one of her kids "destroyed the computer it was on." Listen to the surviving remix and revisit the original below:
aespa's new collection is the 33rd instalment of EDM label ScreaM Records' ongoing iScreaM series, which invites global DJs and producers to rework the songs of artists signed to parent company SM Entertainment. Other artists who've remixed "Supernova" and "Armageddon" for the release include Flava D, 2Space, and Mount XLR.
Grimes continues to work on a follow-up to her 2020 album Miss Anthropocene. Earlier this year she shared some photos from a studio in Paris with the caption: "Cutting vocals. Sorry it's taking so long."
