Green Day calls out JD Vance during "Jesus of Suburbia"

Fants in attendance at Green Day's recent performance in Melbourne, Australia saw frontman Billie Joe Armstrong rewrite the lyrics of "Jesus of Suburbia" to criticize United States Vice President JD Vance.

In a video shared by Brooklyn Vegan, Armstrong changed the line to say:

“Am I retarded, or am I just JD Vance?”

The band also took on global issues, updating another section of the song to reference the ongoing war in Ukraine by substituting Anaheim with "Ukraine," stating:

"We are the kids of war and peace/From Ukraine to the Middle East.”

Green Day has a history of infusing political commentary into their music, a trend that dates back to their 2004 album American Idiot, which was influenced by the political climate during George W. Bush's presidency. Armstrong often adjusts lyrics to reflect current events and figures, previously targeting politicians like Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene and making statements about Elon Musk in recent shows.
