If you can believe it, Damon Albarn and animator Jamie Hewlett's multimedia sensation/"virtual band" Gorillaz have been running for a quarter-century now. Even more surprisingly, yesterday was only the group's first time performing on Saturday Night Live.
To mark the occasion, Albarn and co. not only performed a tune ("The Moon Cave") from just-released new LP The Mountain, but also brought along cult-nerd rapper extraordinaire Del the Funky Homosapien to reprise his verses on "Clint Eastwood", the project's first big hit.
It's pretty rare for an act to perform a two-decade-old song on SNL, though it's not unheard of; David Byrne performed Talking Heads' 1980 classic "Once in a Lifetime" with his touring band when he appeared on the show in 2020. For the psychedelic funk of "The Moon Cave", the group brought along sitar legend Anoushka Shankar (Ravi's daughter), the Roots' Black Thought, and Asha Puthli.
