Goose honor Bob Weir with “One More Saturday Night” at Jam In The Streets

On a cool Saturday night in Athens, Goose headlined Jam In The Streets, marking their first show of 2026. Just weeks after the passing of Bob Weir, one of the last true architects of the American jam songbook, the band chose not to ignore the moment.

After a single, sprawling main set, the band returned to the stage with a kind of reverence tucked beneath their usual loose-limbed confidence. Multi-instrumentalist Peter Anspach addressed the crowd briefly, no grand speech, just enough to acknowledge the air had shifted. Then Rick Mitarotonda stepped forward and counted off a song that carries decades in its bones: “One More Saturday Night”.

The choice landed exactly how it was supposed to. The track, long a cornerstone of the Grateful Dead catalog and one of Weir’s most enduring contributions, felt less like a cover and more like a passing of the torch. Goose hadn’t touched it since the haze of New Year’s Eve 2021, and here, in its 22nd outing, it stretched comfortably between tribute and reclamation.

They didn’t stop there. Bassist Trevor Weekz and drummer Cotter Ellis leaned into the encore’s momentum, steering the band into “The Empress Of Organos,” which unraveled into a playful detour through “Shama Lama Ding Dong”, that eternal earworm from Animal House. It was loose, a little absurd, and exactly the kind of left turn that keeps this scene alive.

Earlier in the night, Goose did what Goose does best: build worlds and let them breathe. “Hot Tea” opened things up wide, and from there the setlist read like a roadmap of extended improvisation, “Arcadia”, “Madalena”, “Echo of a Rose”, “Thatch”, “Hungersite”, “Don’t Leave Me This Way”. None of them rushed. None of them needed to.

Jam In The Streets itself felt like a gathering more than a lineup, with sets from Moon Taxi, Clay Street Unit, Slater Nalley, and Jacoozy filling out the day. But Goose’s closing set hit different.
