Texas one-man death metal act Sallow Moth, the brainchild of multi-instrumentalist Garry Brents, has announced release details for his upcoming third album, Mossbane Lantern, due out August 1 via I, Voidhanger Records.

Brents, the former bassist for Wildspeaker, is also the mastermind behind bands such as Cara Neir, Gonemage, and Homeskin, among other projects. Our very own Melon reviewed Cara Neir's 2013 Portals to a Better, Dead World.

Recorded, mixed, and mastered by Brents at his home studio in Arlington, Texas, Mossbane Lantern features over a dozen contributions from guest musicians, with all songs written and produced between October 2024 and February 2025.

Influences on the album range include Akercocke, Cynic, Cephalic Carnage, Wormed, Mortal Decay, Biolich, Edge of Sanity, Maudlin of the Well, Bark Psychosis, and Funeral Diner, according to the project's Bandcamp page.

Like Brents's other projects, Sallow Moth relies heavily on its concept and backstory throughout its discography. Mossbane Lantern serves as an extension to the anthological format of 2024's Vial EP, revolving around various esoteric, sci-fi artifacts.

But what exactly is a "Mossbane Lantern?"

"It's a powerful, green-encrusted lantern hidden on an icy plane," Brents explains. "It's a highly coveted artifact which allows humans to temporarily displace their corporeal form and teleport short distances within the plane they are on, while granting non-humans the ability to teleport over greater distances, including inter-dimensional travel. Each song depicts a story of a different traveler's experiences on their unique path to the Mossbane Lantern, as well as the aftereffects of activating it in conjunction with these other artifacts."
