Watch out Gorillaz, you’re not the only cartoon band dropping bangers. Both Scooby-Doo and McGruff the Crime Dog have new music projects out. What a time to be alive, where that sentence isn’t even a joke.
Scooby-Doo, the mystery-solving hound from our childhoods, has released an album called Lofi Scooby-Doo. The record “reimagines the iconic themes of Scooby-Doo through the hazy, chilled-out lens of lofi music,” according to WaterTower Music (a Warner Bros. associate). They also added:
“By fusing these worlds, the Lofi Scooby-Doo soundtrack transforms into something greater: a cross-generational bridge, tapping into childhood nostalgia while also resonating with today’s lofi listeners. It’s music for late nights, lazy afternoons, and, of course, for the month-long celebration of all things Scooby-Doo during Scoobtober.”
Yes, apparently “Scoobtober” is a thing. Not sure how you celebrate it beyond listening to hip-hop Lofi Scooby-Doo beats, but I’m intrigued.
And then there’s McGruff the Crime Dog. You might know him from his 1986 anti-drug anthem “Cocaine & Crack”. He’s been “taking a bite out of crime” since 1980, and in the mid-’80s he recorded an entire record, McGruff’s Smart Kids, originally released on cassette. It’s long been a collector’s item, but Enjoy The Ride Records and Enjoy The Toons Records, in partnership with the National Crime Prevention Council, have now reissued it as a deluxe 2xLP. One pressing even has a literal bite taken out of it — a nod to McGruff’s iconic slogan.
As a ’90s kid, I can honestly say I feel safer knowing McGruff is back in our lives, still warning us about the real shit we need to watch out for.
With Scooby chasing lofi vibes and McGruff still taking a bite out of vinyl, one thing’s clear: the dog days are far from over – they’re just getting started.
What do you think?
