Steve Perry has shut down the reunion rumors almost immediately.
Longtime fans of Journey understandably lost their minds this week when keyboardist and co-founder Jonathan Cain floated the idea that original frontman Steve Perry might rejoin the band for their so-called Final Frontier North American farewell run.
Cain told Ultimate Classic Rock that guitarist Neal Schon had already reached out. “[Perry’s] thinking about it,” Cain said, adding that the door was open. Wide open, in fact. “It’s never too late.”
But rock bands, like relationships, rarely rewind cleanly. Perry first left in 1987, briefly returned from 1995 to 1998, and then stepped away for good. Since then, the mic has passed from Steve Augeri to Jeff Scott Soto, and ultimately to Arnel Pineda, the YouTube discovery turned full-time frontman who’s held it down since 2007.
And now, just as nostalgia started revving its engine, Perry has officially pulled the parking brake.
In a post on X dated Feb. 19, he addressed the speculation directly, saying the rumors of a reunion simply aren’t true. He acknowledged the love, the hope, and the shared history, but made it clear that this chapter isn’t reopening.

Instead, Perry says he’s focused on new creative work, on making music that reflects who he is now, not who he was in 1982.
Meanwhile, Journey’s farewell lineup will feature Cain, Schon, Pineda, drummer Dean Castronovo, keyboardist Jason Derlatka, and bassist Todd Jensen.
