Foo Fighters have let drummer Josh Freese (Vandals) know that his services in the band are no longer needed after Freese stepped into the role following the death of long-time Foo's drummer Taylor Hawkins.

Freese joined in May of 2023, officially announced during a live stream event.

Freese was "shocked and disappointed" by the decision and noted the band chose to "go in a different direction" – with no other reason given.

Freese says:

"The Foo Fighters called me Monday night to let me know they've decided 'to go in a different direction with their drummer.' No reason was given,. Regardless, I enjoyed the past two years with them, both on and off stage, and I support whatever they feel is best for the band. In my 40 years of drumming professionally, I've never been let go from a band, so while I'm not angry — just a bit shocked and disappointed. But as most of you know I've always worked freelance and bounced between bands, so I'm fine. Stay tuned for my 'Top 10 Possible Reasons Josh Got Booted From The Foo Fighters' list."

Freese, 52, has been a steady session drummer, as well as a member of the Vandals since 1989, and he has collaborated with a ton of artists over the years, including Devo, Guns N' Roses, Nine Inch Nails, and others.

Foo Fighters an upcoming show scheduled for October 4 at the Singapore Grand Prix. The band had canceled tour plans last year after Grohl shared news that he was focusing on his family after having a child outside of his marriage.

Before Freese joined to Foo Fighters, some expected the band to choose Oliver Shane Hawkins to fill the role. Oliver, the son of the late Foo Fighters drummer, had performed with the band, delivering an emotional performance of "My Hero" after his father's death on MTV in 2022.
