Flying Lotus is back, baby! The California producer just announced the EP BIG MAMA, coming out on March 6 via his own Brainfeeder imprint.
After almost 20 years of founding the label, but keeping his own major releases on Warp, FlyLo is finally releasing his own material via the imprint that has signed Thundercat, The Gaslamp Killer, Hiatus Kaiyote, and many others.
"I think it was just time at this point to work with the label that I built and work more closely with the team that’s around me more. You know, we’ve been able to compete with some pretty big records in the world, we’ve been at the Grammys several times, and I think we’ve built a nice situation for ourselves, so why not?", says the artist.
BIG MAMA comes over two years after Spirit Box, an EP Flying Lotus dropped back in 2024. He has not released a full-length studio album (apart from TV and film soundtracks) since 2019's Flamagra. He started working on BIG MAMA right after dropping the soundtrack to his own film, Ash, in March last year.
Comparing to Ash, BIG MAMA is way freer, and comes from a very personal, chaos-fueled place for FlyLo. There's no single available for the EP yet, but he says the record feels like "being shot out of a cannon, just explosive, unpredictable energy. Like a fuckin’ computer gone awry. Like a machine that had just lost its mind."
