Florist share tender new song "This Was A Gift"

Acclaimed indie-folk collective Florist have released a new song called "This Was A Gift" via imprint Double Double Whammy. It's the first new music from the quartet since their 2022 self-titled second LP.

Listen to the song below:

Florist's Emily Sprague on "This Was A Gift".

"’This Was A Gift’ is a love song about enduring difficult seasons of life with the people that we keep close. It is a musical push and pull that mirrors and describes the process of becoming vulnerable to heartbreak and loss that leads to the acceptance of eventual endings and appreciation of community. The band developed and grew with this song over the course of two years of live touring before committing it to recording, further deepening the roots of its meaning.”

After the project's intimate debut Emily Alone (2019), Florist expanded their songwriting to a more communal wavelength on their critically lauded self-titled album, complementing their songs with field recordings and instrumentals. Spanning 19-tracks, it has been likened more to an impressionistic documentary that bristles against the traditional album format.

How Florist will follow this project is still somewhat of a question mark, but the press release hints at music that zooms in on the intimacy of relationships, but also resonates as a more larger universal scale. “We don’t enter our collaboration environment trying to leave our personal stuff at the door," Sprague comments. "We always bring it in and we struggle and thrive while trying to swim through it.” See the artwork for "This Was A Gift" below.

Additionally, Florist have announced new tour dates, heading for Australia this month, followed by a four-day residency in November at Ridgewood venue Cassette in Queens, New York. H. Pruz, Alena Spranger, Bobbie and Allegra Krieger will be guests on some of the later shows.
