Five Finger Death Punch re-record songs, citing Taylor Swift as inspiration

Five Finger Death Punch, the metal band hailing from Las Vegas, have found themselves in a situation all too familiar for many artists: their former record label, Prospect Park, sold the band's masters without their knowledge.

According to the band's manager, Allen Kovac, Prospect Park had signed the band into what he calls "the worst deal I've ever seen," one that allowed the label to take 50% of nearly all profits — including merch — while never giving the band ownership of their music.

This is where Taylor Swift enters the picture. After facing a similar battle over her masters when they were sold to Scooter Braun, Swift famously re-recorded and re-released several of her albums under the "Taylor's Version" banner — a move that ultimately paid off. Her fans rallied behind her, and the success of the re-releases was so massive that her label eventually folded and sold her masters back for a reported $360 million.

Inspired by Swift's proactive approach, Five Finger Death Punch have begun re-recording tracks from across their catalog. Guitarist Zoltan Bathory said:

"[Taylor Swift] could have gone into a costly lawsuit, or she could have felt sorry for herself. [Instead] she just sprung into action and did what she had to do. That's the way of life, and we will do what is necessary and legally can be done."

Manager Allen Kovac of 10th Street Entertainment added:

"She got them to think a little bit about what their rights were. They want to be able to determine how these songs are promoted, marketed, licensed, visualized."

So far, the band has released "I Refuse", "Jekyll and Hyde", and their cover of "Bad Company", as re-recorded Five Finger Death Punch's Version tracks. All three songs will appear on their upcoming album 20 Years of Five Finger Death Punch – Best Of Volume 1, which includes 14 re-recorded tracks and three live cuts, out July 18th.
