Swedish death metal outfit Fimbul Winter, which features three former members of Amon Amarth, have announced their debut EP What Once Was, due out November 14 independently.
Formed a couple years ago to perform Amon Amarth's classic 1994 demo The Arrival of the Fimbul Winter for founding Amon Amarth drummer Niko Kaukinen's 50th birthday, Fimbul Winter also features founding Amon Amarth guitarist Anders Biazzi (then Hansson) and longtime Amon Amarth drummer Fredrik Andersson, with the addition of vocalist Clint Williams (Munitions, Nemesium).
During the band's first press push last year, the foursome stated:
"The idea started with Niko wanting to play the demo 'The Arrival Of The Fimbul Winter', which he recorded over 30 years ago, at his 50th-birthday party. Fredrik thought it sounded like fun and offered to play the guitar. After that Anders was asked to join in and then with the addition of friends Linus Nirbrant on bass and Clint on vocals, a selected amount of friends got to experience this unique lineup and hear the tracks that once laid the foundation to what was to become. Having so much fun playing together and realizing all three former members had a ton of killer old-school material, the decision to keep on playing and to eventually record new songs was made."
While Nirbrant performed bass for the birthday gig, Tobias Cristiansson (Necrophobic, Dismember) provided session bass for the band's debut EP, according to release notes.
No music has been released yet, but What Once Was promises to stay true to the Swedish melodeath sound by using rediscovered riffs originally written for Amon Amarth and completely new compositions that channel decades of experience.
Fimbul Winter states:
"What Once Was reflects where we come from and what we still believe in: honest, melodic death metal. No trends, no polish—just the raw elements we feel are missing from much of today’s metal."

What Once Was is out November 14. Full tracklist:
1. Storms Rage
2. What Once Was
3. Mounds Of Stones
4. A Soul That Soared
