Filmmaker Sally Potter readies new album, shares new song "Words"

In addition to writing and directing movies since the late 70s, acclaimed English filmmaker Sally Potter is also an accomplished singer, songwriter, and composer. She is now gearing up to release a new album. Anatomy, out May 2 via Bella Union, follows her first studio album Pink Bikini from 2023.

Potter has now also released a new single from the album, "Words". Listen below:

The Orlando director spends the song ruminating on how integral language is in our era of "non-stop information," saying:

"‘Words’ is a love song to language: the universal miracle we take for granted. The first sounds uttered, somewhere, a long time ago, evolved into a complex form of communication that we abuse at our peril, for it is the most precious tool we have. ‘Words matter’ is the repeated refrain in this song, and they do. They can be used as a weapon, a distorting mirror, or as a source of solace and clarity. ‘Words’ urges us to honour the beautiful human privilege of speech."

While Pink Bikini was her first studio record, Potter has been a composer and songwriter for about as long as she's made films. She wrote or co-wrote the scores for many of her own films, including Orlando, The Tango Lesson, Yes, and 2020's The Roads Not Taken, her most recent film.

Of the new LP – which also includes the previously-shared "Coming Home" – Potter describes it as "love songs to the Earth," elaborating further:

"We're not separate from the Earth, and our downfall is when we think of ourselves as such and see the planet as something we can exploit without consequences."

Potter will also give a rare live performance at Cafe Oto in London on May 6, for which you can buy tickets here. She will also be delivering a talk Rough Trade East on May 8.
