After the release of singles "I Guess Time Just Makes Fools of Us All", "Screamland", and "She Cleans Up", as well as a Greatish Hits album, Father John Misty has finally unveiled his sixth, and potentially final, studio album, Mahashmashana.
The album's title, Mahashmashana, is Sanskrit for "great cremation ground". Appropriately, in a recent interview with World Cafe, Misty remarked, "This album does feel, I mean, I don't want to crash any markets or anything, but this does feel like the last record to me".
Through the album's 8 tracks and just over 50-minute runtime, we find Misty grappling with aging, existential angst, accidental acid trips, and fatherhood. His sound is as extravagant as ever, with his biting sarcasm still shining through. FJM fans will recognize these as familiar topics; yet, he approaches them in a more reflective state on this record. If this is truly the end for Father John Misty, it serves as a fitting elegy.
Mahashmashana is now available to stream on your favorite platform, and you can catch Misty on tour with Destroyer this upcoming winter.
