Father John Misty announces new album ‘Mahashmashana’ and 2025 tour

Hot on the heels of his Greatish Hits… compilation, released just last month, Josh Tillman has announced his sixth Father John Misty album, Mahashmashana, arriving on 22 November via Bella Union in Europe and Sub Pop everywhere else. The title is derived from the Sanskrit word mahāśmaśāna (महामशान), which we're told means “great cremation ground, all things going thither,” referring to the holy city of Benares or Varanasi in northern India.

The eight-track album includes the previously released “I Guess Time Makes Fools of Us All” and new single “Screamland”, a seven-minute epic featuring Alan Sparhawk of Low on guitar and strings arranged by Drew Erickson, who co-produced the album with Tillman (in addition to BJ Burton on mixing on two tracks).

“After a decade being born, Josh Tillman is finally busy dying,” says Sub Pop on their webstore, with no further explanation. These songs are perhaps meant to speak for themselves.

Watch the video for “Screamland” below. Director Estefania Kröl describes it as “a visual journey through the depths of ‘Screamland,’ capturing the essence of both the music and the artists,” adding “Father John Misty blends seamlessly into the scene, becoming a part of the city, a living echo of ‘Screamland’.”

Other contributors to Mahashmashana include engineering and additional production from Michael Harris, while Jonathan Wilson is credited as executive producer as well as playing on the album alongside Dan Bailey, Eli Thomson, David Vandervelde, Chris Dixie Darley, Jon Titterington, and Kyle Flynn.
