Jasmin Mote, aka jazzygold, is a relatively new face in music, with only a small handful of songs released so far, but the Faroe Islands-based artist with Kenyan roots is already starting to turn heads with her defiantly unfiltered take on R&B and soul-pop. On her latest single "homerun", out today, Mote gets deep into her feelings on family, identity, and taking the big swings in life. Listen & watch the music video here:
Growing up in the small Faroese town of Vestmanna as a mixed-culture kid with brown skin and curly hair, Mote was always aware of how different she and her two siblings were from the families around them. On "homerun", she takes those memories and the pain of a largely absent father and spins them into a survival story full of gratitude and courage. "[It's] a song I've wanted to write forever," she says, "but I never felt ready to share my personal story until now."
Written and produced with Daniel Hedberg, "homerun" is the first track to be taken from jazzygold's debut EP, due in early 2025 via Tutl Records. The video, in which Mote and her siblings revisit the home they grew up in, was directed and edited by Faroese singer/songwriter and poet Dania O. Tausen. "It made my mom cry so we know it's good," she wrote in an Instagram post.
Welcoming the song into the world, she adds:
"'homerun' is more than just a song – it’s a piece of my heart. This track represents the journey, the struggles, and the dreams that have shaped me. It's for everyone who's ever felt like they had to push a little harder to make their voice heard 🤎 I poured my everything into this, and I hope it resonates with you."<
