In anticipation of the holiday season, Ed Sheeran has released a mournful new Christmas song, "Under the Tree".
The track, which starts as a sparse piano ballad before swelling into a cinematic orchestral arrangement, describes the pain of spending Christmas alone:
"You were the hearth light, my fire that died/ Waiting for morning sunrise/ There is nothing under the tree that I wished for."
"Under the Tree" was written for the upcoming animated holiday film, That Christmas, which is coming to Netflix next month. Sheeran took to Instagram this morning to talk about the inspiration for the song:
"This song is written about a character in the film who wants to spend Christmas with his dad, but doesn’t get to. It’s a heartbreaking scene, and something so many people go through every year being alone at Christmas."
The music video for "Under the Tree" features Claudia Jessie (of Bridgerton fame) as well as clips from That Christmas, which will begin streaming on Netflix on December 4.
