After collaborating with Earthquaker Devices in the past on the release of the Special Cranker, Lee Kiernan of Idles has been graced with his own signature guitar pedal from the Akron, Ohio company.
Dubbed "the Gary", Kiernan debuted the "Automatic Pulse Width Modulation Fuzz and Dynamic Natural Overdrive" in a special video with Premier Guitar, where he explained how the idea of a signature pedal came about and what exactly all of that means with Rig Rundown host Chris Kies.
"Gary replaces the Gray Channel I used to have, and it actually started because I asked Earthquaker whether or not they would be up for making me a section of the Gray Channel, and I only wanted that," Kiernan told Premier Guitar.
After explaining the process of trimming the Gray Channel down to its most basic of elements, Kiernan explained how the second half of the pedal came about, which pairs the DOD 250-style overdrive with a square wave fuzz with a pulse-able signal.
Kiernan notes:
"And now we have Gary, which is a one side overdrive the other side fuzz, but the fuzz on this has like a square wave frequency, so I can move between and change the intensity of the wave ... But also how much it interacts with the guitar and how much it can bottom out. Because I used to have this fuzz that you could really hit the floor with, so I always loved that, but you could never control it. But now you can."
With a right side instantly reminiscent of the band's 2021 single "Car Crash", paired up with a time-worn overdrive circuit used by everyone from Yngwie Malmsteen to Andrew Bailey of DIIV, the Gary should be a welcomed addition to the pedalboard of any indie rocker, bedroom doomer, or fan of Idles looking to get some serious musical bang for their buck.
