Duolingo adds songs by Whitney Houston, P!nk, and others to music course

Launched in October last year, Duolingo’s music education course expanded this week with the addition of over 60 songs from dozens of artists licensed through a new partnership with Sony Music.

Until now, the Music course has included only beginner-level songs in the public domain, like “Pop Goes the Weasel” and “Clair de Lune”. The addition of tracks from artists like Whitney Houston, P!nk, Hozier, and TLC offers a whole new world of opportunity for learning about music theory and songcraft.

There are a couple of caveats, though. Currently the songs are only available for iOS, and for learners using Duolingo in English, Spanish, French, and German, with other language options coming later down the line.

Learners with a paid subscription to Super Duolingo have unlimited access to the songs, but free users are restricted to playing each song up to 3 times, for a maximum of 30 seconds per day.

The newly-added songs include tracks by:

Whitney Houston (“My Love is Your Love”, "So Emotional")
P!nk ("Get the Party Started", "Funhouse")
Hozier ("Work Song", "Someone New")
TLC ("Creep")
Sia ("Move Your Body")
Pharrell Williams ("Come Get It Bae")
Cyndi Lauper ("True Colors")
Meghan Trainor ("Made You Look")
Bleachers ("Rollercoaster")
Cheap Trick ("I Want You to Want Me")
Train ("Drops of Jupiter", "Drive By")
Dove Cameron ("Girl Like Me")
Mimi Webb ("Ghost of You")

and many more.

In a press release, Sony Music's Jessica Shaw said:

“Partnering with Duolingo gives us the opportunity to bring our artists’ music to a new platform that promotes learning and cultural exchange. Music has the power to unite and inspire, and this partnership will help learners engage with music education in a meaningful and enjoyable way.”
