On October 9th, a federal judge put an end to the defamation lawsuit filed by Drake against Universal Music Group (UMG). Regarding hit Kendrick Lamar single "Not Like Us", the widely-mocked case declared that UMG defamed Drake by releasing and excessively promoting the scathing track.
Judge Jeannette Vargas ruled that a "heated rap battle" and the resulting "war of words" were not violations of the law. To put a nail in the coffin, portions of the case were dubbed "logically incoherent."
The context of the battle, ultimately, "would not incline the reasonable listener to believe that 'Not Like Us' imparts verifiable facts about plaintiff," according to Vargas.
UMG had described the lawsuit as "frivolous" and "illegal" at the time of the initial filing in January. In a recent statement, a UMG spokesperson approved the dismissing of the case and that the group hopes to continue "successfully promoting Drake's music and investing in his career."
The case's dismissal has been a long time coming, with "Not Like Us" first surfacing in May of 2024. The track netted Lamar five Grammy awards, and he went on to perform it at the Super Bowl.
Aubrey Drake "Drake" Graham's attorneys stated to Billboard that they "intend to appeal today's ruling." Oh boy...
