Drake settles lawsuit after docs show no wrongdoing

It looks like Drake and iHeartMedia have reached a settlement regarding the dispute stemming from allegations made by Drake against the American radio company over “covert payments” to promote airplay of Kendrick Lamar’s diss track “Not Like Us.”

The settlement was confirmed through a legal filing in Bexar County, Texas, revealing that both parties have come to an agreement that satisfies their respective interests. A source from iHeartMedia told Rolling Stone that the arrangement involved the exchange of documents demonstrating that the radio company did not engage in any wrongdoing.

“In exchange for documents that showed iHeart did nothing wrong, Drake agreed to drop his petition.  No payments were made – by either one of us.”

As a result of the agreement, Drake will withdraw his petition with no payments made by either party. Drake’s legal team was satisfied with the resolution but opted not to elaborate further.

Meanwhile, Universal Music Group (UMG), which is the label for both Drake and Kendrick Lamar, has not commented on this news as of yet. Drake previously filed a defamation lawsuit against UMG, accusing the company of launching a campaign to promote Lamar’s track "Not Like Us" while being aware of its contents, which included damaging allegations against Drake.

In his legal filings, Drake contended that UMG had engaged in a scheme involving payments to iHeartMedia to influence airplay, violating regulations concerning pay-to-play practices. The track in question, according to Drake, contains accusations labeling him as a “certified pedophile,” according to the petition from Drake.

“Before it approved the release of the song, UMG knew that the song itself, as well as its accompanying album art and music video, attacked the character of another one of UMG’s most prominent artists, Drake, by falsely accusing him of being a sex offender, engaging in pedophilic acts, harboring sex offenders, and committing other criminal sexual acts.

Specifically, the song calls Drake a ‘certified pedophile,’ a ‘predator,’ and someone whose name should ‘be registered and placed on neighborhood watch.’”

The rivalry between Drake and Lamar that began last year has seemingly yet to cease, being highlighted at the Grammys, the Super Bowl, and now is even playing out in the courtroom. UMG is expected to respond to the defamation claims by March 17.
