On $ome $exy $ongs 4 U, his newly released joint album with PARTYNEXTDOOR, Drake has been clear about his desire to move away from trading blows with Kendrick Lamar and instead make some lighter party music. But, that hasn't stopped him from addressing the beef on aptly titled "GIMME A HUG". Drake needs some love right now, but he's still not ready to throw in the towel entirely.
From the first line, the Canadian artist references a podcast quote from Lamar stating that he wants to see Drake "eliminated" from the top of the industry. He then leads into some much needed self-love in hopes of boosting his own ego:
Yeah, Drake elimination, fake intimidation/Take a minute, take a deep breath, have a little bit of patience/Drizzy, you amazin', you the inspiration/You set the bar for the next generation
Next, he mentions that many want to see him taken down, using an odd simile comparing himself to disgraced wrestler Hulk Hogan, although he thanks his fans for sticking with him.
N*ggas want to see RIP me on a t-shirt like I’m Hulk Hogan/I appreciate the fans rocking with me, this is really just a small token
However, the tone of resignation stops here because he soon continues to launch a couple perceived disses at Kendrick. For starters, he wonders why people want to see him taken down because it's not like Kendrick could take his place with their dense lyricism and difficult to dance to songs. He describes a Houston strip club with girls dancing using dictionaries to highlight this:
Funny how it’s only bitch nggas that are waiting on the boy’s obituary/‘Cause if I die, it’s these n*ggas that become the sole beneficiary/And what the fuck are they gon’ do with it?/Head of girls up at 29, on stage twerkin' with a dictionary
He also claims that his longtime collaborator 21 Savage still supports him, and also that a friend of Lil Durk used to "drill" people to his acclaimed R&B song "Marvin's Room", which goes to show that he's not just some pop pretty boy:
Durk’s boy told me Marvin’s Room was his favorite song, he was drilling to it/Thousand n*ggas rappin' murder shit and like ten n*ggas that’ll really do it/Savage, you the only n*gga checkin' on me when we really in some shit, brother
He makes it clear later on in the song that he has far different intentions in the game than Kendrick does:
Fuck a rap beef, I’m tryna get the party lit/Tryna get the party lit for the bitches
Finally, a beat switch metaphorically shows that Drake is moving on as he begs for strippers to give him a hug over a sample of Aaron Hall's "I Miss You":
Give me a hug, give me a hug/What can I say? I miss you girls, I’m stuck in my ways/Princess, Gigi, Pooh, Pink, Luxury, y'all gotta come to the stage/Yeah, come to the stage and show me some love
Overall, it seems that Drake is still bitter, but he's started to accept that he took a solid lyrical beating from Kendrick Lamar. It might take some time to regain credibility, but he's content waiting at his favorite strip club pumping out party songs until then.
