Dr. Demento announces retirement after 55 years on air

Ricky Adams

Dr. Demento (real name Barret Hansen), the legendary comedy radio host, announced his retirement mid-show earlier this week after an incredible 55-year run. The Dr. Demento Show originally debuted in 1970 and went on to become a launching pad for parody and comedy icons like Barnes & Barnes, Bill Frenzer, and most notably, "Weird Al" Yankovic.

Rainn Wilson, best known for the role of Dwight on The Office, even portrayed Dr. Demento alongside Daniel Radcliffe (as Yankovic) in the feature film Weird: The Al Yankovic Story.

The show will continue airing retrospective episodes through October, featuring Dr. Demento’s personal favorites as well as listener requests. Check the schedule here to catch a final broadcast before the show signs off for good.
