During the final set of Day 1 of Camp Flog Gnaw, Donald Glover made his triumphant return to the stage under his Childish Gambino moniker, marking his first full set since September 7, 2024, in New Orleans, Louisiana.
Running through 18 songs ranging from old to new, Glover decided to take a moment to explain to fans where he's been over the last year, and the medical complications that required him to end his The New World Tour last fall.
"You guys voted for where have I been monologue. Okay, so I was doing this world tour. It's having lots of fun, really loving seeing you guys out there, and I had a really bad pain in my head in Louisiana, and I did the show anyway. I couldn't really see well," Glover explained.
"So when we went to Houston, I went to the hospital and the doctor was like you had a stroke and the first thing I thought was like, ‘Oh like here I am still copying Jamie Foxx.’ That's really like the second thing the first thing was like 'I'm letting everybody down.'
"But I've broken my foot. I always promised Ireland I'm gonna be there, and I still haven't been. And they found a hole in my heart, so I had this surgery, but then I had to have another surgery."
Billed as his final tour under the Childish Gambino moniker, Glover only made it 18 shows into the run before the rest was scrapped, with the final 41 shows being canceled between September 8, 2024, and February 11, 2025. Fortunately, Glover finished his monologue with some positivity, which could mean that the project isn't on its final legs anymore after all.
“You know that they say everybody has two lives, and the second life starts when you realize you have one. You got one life, guys,” Glover said. “The life I've lived with you guys has been such a blessing. I love seeing and performing for you guys. As my wife says, what I love, she's like, 'If this life is a flavor, as soon as I'm done, give me another scoop.' You should be living your life how you want, it can only get better if we have to do this again. It can only get better.”
