DJ Funk has passed away at the age of 54, a loss confirmed by close friend and collaborator DJ Slugo in an Instagram post. Slugo wanted to wait for accurate information from the family before making an announcement.
DJ Funk was a big figure in Chicago house music, beginning his career in dance music during the late 1980s. He rose to prominence with releases on labels like Dance Mania and Pro-Jex, and he played a key role in shaping the ghetto house genre.
His 1999 album Booty House Anthems became a commercial success, followed by two additional installments, Booty House Anthems 2 in 2006 and Booty House Anthems 3 in 2013. In 2006, after completing a remix for the electronic group Justice, he established Funk Records, which became a platform for his music, mixtapes, and tracks featuring artists like DJ Deeon and Lil’ Louis.
Slugo said:
"I didn't wanna say nothing myself until I officially got the word from his family, I had seen a lot of people post and a lot of people with misinformation. DJ Funk has passed."
This comes after friends of DJ Funk introduced a crowdfunding campaign aimed at covering funeral expenses for DJ Funk, known as Charles Chambers. Last week, his family shared that he had been battling stage four cancer and did not have much time left, so they created this fundraiser.
