Diddy denied bail; will remain in jail until October sentencing

Sean "Diddy" Combs has been denied bail and will remain behind bars until his sentencing in his federal trail, where he was found guilty on two counts of transportation for prostitution and not guilty on charges of sex trafficking and racketeering.

After reconvening in the federal courtroom, Judge Aran Subramanian announced his ruling, saying it would be "impossible" for Diddy to prove he was not a danger to the public if released on bail. The judge used examples from the defense attorney's own arguments where they admitted to Diddy's pattern of violent behavior.

“You full-throatedly in your closing argument told the jury that there was violence here,” Subramanian said to Diddy attorney Marc Agnifilo, quoting his summation on Friday: “‘We own the domestic violence. We own it.'”

The judge said the defense had "prevailed" getting Diddy acquitted on the more serious charges of racketeering and sex trafficking, but said "domestic violence is violence" and evidence of such could be considered when determining bail.

Agnifilo told Subramanian that Diddy had enrolled in a batterer's program and went to meetings in New York before his arrest last September. He said Diddy has been a "remarkable prisoner" and is "working on himself."

“I think we should trust him. He’s not going to flee," he said. "He’s been given his life back … He’s going to have next chapters of his life.”

The defense argued that the case had "exceptional" circumstances which should allow Diddy's release, including looking after his children and 85-year-old mother, Janice Combs.

Prosecutor Maurene Comey argued that "the only thing exceptional" about Diddy "is his wealth, his violence, and his brazenness," reminding the judge of Diddy's recent domestic violence.

“There is nothing exceptional about this case except for his continued criminality,” Comey said. “He’s an extremely violent man with an extraordinarily dangerous temper who has shown no remorse and no regret for his multiple victims.”

At one point, Diddy indicated that he wanted to speak during the bail hearing, but he ultimately chose not to, according to Variety.

A virtual hearing has been set to discuss a pre-sentencing report at 2 p.m. ET July 8. Diddy will remain behind bars until his sentencing hearing set for 10 a.m. ET October 3.
