To mark the 1-year anniversary of his 11th studio album Flying Wig, Devendra Banhart has shared a previously unheard outtake from the recording sessions. Running to almost seven minutes, "The Rose" is a song that Banhart says "just had too many words for an album that was meant to evoke a desolate landscape" and "not enough space in it to express that kind of feeling."
Writing on Instagram, he reveals that the title of the song comes from a "monumental painting" by artist Jay DeFeo, which Banhart says "radiates a light borne from a lifetime of devoted labor," adding that the song itself "feels like a self portrait." Read his full quote below.
As Banhart mentions, "The Rose" features Welsh singer/songwriter Cate Le Bon, who produced and played on every track from the Flying Wig sessions, including "The Rose", which she also co-wrote. Listen to it below.
Banhart has two shows coming up next week, with support from Marina Allen:
10/02 Los Angeles, CA @ The Ford
10/03 Big Sur, CA @ Henry Miller Memorial Library
