Detroit techno co-founder Juan Atkins was found dead in his hotel room in Mexico City on October 31. Atkins was set to perform a set at the Yu Yu Cine Club. He was 64.
Atkins was a part of the Bellevelle Three before founding Cybotron when he was 18 with Richard "3070" Davis. They would go on to produce hits such as "Cosmic Radiance" and "Clear." He also formed his own record label in 1985 called Metroplex, and had also been part of Borderland.
He would release nine studio albums under different monikers. His last album Mind Merge LP was released as a collaboration with Dutch DJ Orlando Voorn as the artist name Frequency vs Atkins.
In an 2014 interview with the Guardian, Atkins spoke about his songwriting stating "My lyrics are supposed to make you think about something other than shaking your booty on the dance floor and falling in love.”
