Deftones announce tenth album ‘private music’ — first in 5 years, share lead single “my mind is a mountain”

Deftones have announced their long-awaited new album private music, set for release on August 22 via Reprise. The follow-up to 2020’s Ohms marks their first LP with touring bassist Fred Sablan, after the departure of Sergio Vega in 2021 due to a contract dispute.

The alternative metal band have dropped the lead single “my mind is a mountain” which you can listen below:

According to a press release, Deftones recorded and co-produced private music in multiple locations across California, including Malibu and Joshua Tree, as well as in Nashville. Nick Raskulinecz, who worked on the ensemble’s Diamond Eyes and 2012's Koi No Yokan albums, returns to produce their forthcoming disc.

Their profile bio describes the result of this collaboration as a new benchmark for them:

“Meditating on the beauty and peril of nature, the challenge of cultivating a positive mindset and visions of a journey beyond the physical realm, private music showcases Deftones at their most evolved. At once a psychedelic voyage and a skull-rattling wallop[...]”.

The Chino Moreno-led group teased the upcoming album during their headline show at Crystal Palace Park in London on June 29. When they projected the title private music on the side screens of the stage, and the date “X.VII.MMXXV” (10 July, 2025 in numeral numbers).

Then, on July 8 and 9, the outfit shared a slew of stills of what appears to be a preview of a music video of “my mind is a mountain” with lyrics from the track in white in the middle of the shots.

The group will embark on a tour through North America just in time for the arrival of private music on August 22 until September 17 with support from Phantogram and IDLES on select dates and The Barbarians of California on all dates, as well as a festival attendance in Mexico City for Corona Capital.
