deadmau5 liquidates music catalog and mau5trap label for $55 million

deadmau5 has finalized a deal to transfer ownership of his extensive music catalog and that of his mau5trap label to Create Music Group for a sum exceeding $55 million. This agreement, announced through a press release shared with EDM.com, includes more than 4,000 tracks.

Jonathan Strauss, co-founder and CEO of Create Music Group, commented on the acquisition:

"When deadmau5 put on that helmet, he didn’t just create a brand—he sparked a movement. Now, as the stewards of deadmau5 and mau5trap’s legendary catalog, we inherit a legacy that changed music forever."

Founded in 2007, mau5trap has been massively influential in the electronic music scene, nurturing artists like Skrillex, REZZ, and the late i_o.

In addition to acquiring the catalog, Create Music Group will pursue a joint venture aimed at producing new music from deadmau5 and the broader mau5trap roster. The partnership will apparently leverage CMG's data to enhance artists’ earnings through streaming, content monetization, and brand collaborations.

As part of that, Create Music Group will remaster and re-release selected tracks from the mau5trap collection, create exclusive content, and integrate the brand into emerging digital platforms, including VR and gaming. Sounds like the new investors are moving quickly to recoup their costs.

deadmau5 said:

"I have worked closely with Jonathan, Alex and Create for nearly two decades now, building my own career as well as the artists on mau5trap. We didn’t need to look far when we were considering a partner to help get it all to the next level."

The move makes deadmau5 the latest electronic artist to sell his music catalog, following artists like Calvin Harris and David Guetta, and the family of Avicii, who have all taken on similar agreements.
