De La Soul have announced their 10th album Cabin In The Sky – the group's first in nine years and follow-up to the Grammy-nominated and the Anonymous Nobody... – which drops on November 21 via Mass Appeal.
It is the group's first LP after founding member David Jude Jolicoeur (also known as Trugoy, Dave, and Trugoy the Dove) passed away in 2023. Listen to the Pete Rock-produced lead single "The Package" below:
Aside from Pete Rock, the 20-track project has confirmed contributions from producers DJ Premier and Super Dave, as well as guests Killer Mike, Little Dragon’s Yukimi, Common, Nas, and Black Thought.
Maseo and Posdnuos explained that the title Cabin In The Sky is inspired by the 1943 all-Black musical of the same name, which starred Lena Horne, Louis Armstrong, and Duke Ellington.
Pos said the following about its meaning in a press release:
"Cabin in the Sky lives in that space between loss and light. It’s about the pain we carry and the joy that somehow still finds us. This album is therapy and celebration at the same time. There’s a vulnerability in these songs, because everything we’ve been through has brought us to this moment, to this album, honoring what we’ve lost and lifting up what still remains. That duality. That’s life, and that’s De La."
The upcoming disc is the sixth installment in Mass Appeal's seven-part "Legend Has It" series, preceded by records from Slick Rick, Raekwon, Ghostface Killah, Mobb Deep, and Big L, and which will conclude with a joint album from Nas and DJ Premier.
