Composer and songwriter Danny Elfman has released a new song, "Monkeys on the Loose", to celebrate Halloween.
Speaking on the holiday, Elfman stated: “Halloween has obviously been a huge part of my life, and I’d been working on a big batch of new songs for my upcoming album. [Producer Nick Launay] had taken on the task of trying some arrangement/production ideas on this crazy song ‘Monkeys on the Loose,’ and while working on it, we thought… wouldn’t it be wild to work up a version for a special Halloween release (even though it was barely over a week away!).”
The song takes its inspiration from industrial music, perhaps unsurprising as his band consists of two members of Nine Inch Nails' touring band — Ilan Rubin and Robin Fincke. Elfman has been playing the song live since early summer this year, and released a music video featuring a homicidal dancing monkey with the song.
The song comes just weeks after the release of Elfman’s soundtrack to Tim Burton’s new film Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, the highly anticipated sequel to Burton's beloved 1988 macabre comedy. It also comes just before his final two North American shows of the year. Elfman, alongside his band featuring the likes of Stu Brooks and Robin Finck, will play songs from the new film and his back catalogue on November 2nd at the Hollywood Bowl and November 3rd at the Shoreline Amphitheatre before embarking on a few European dates.
