Daft Punk's anime film "Interstella 5555" to be shown in theaters for one (more) time only

Legendary dance duo Daft Punk have announced their science fiction anime film that accompanied their classic 2001 album Discovery, "Interstella 5555: The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5ystem", will be in theatres for one day on Thursday, December 12th, 2024.

The masterminds of Daft Punk, Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo, created the concept of the film with collaborator Cédric Hervet. It was directed by Kazuhisa Takenouchi who collaborated with long time manga artist Leiji Matsumoto and Toei Animation. The film contains every song off of Discovery and has no dialogue.

The film is also now upscaled in 4k, but many fans on social media have been critical of its "restoration," saying it looks like bad AI.

The film was released in 2003 and had a limited theatrical run, but hasn't returned to cinemas since. Now, Daft Punk fans around the world will get a chance watch the film in 800 cinemas and 40 countries for one night.

Toei Animation's Shinji Shimizu, who produced the film, said "'One More Time' was playing all over the town at that time. I felt so proud that I wanted to shout to people on the street, 'We are making its animation now!'"

Daft Punk is also releasing new merchandise for the film. There's vinyl, CDs, slipmats, stickers, and clothing. The vinyl and CD comes with original Japanese artwork. The gold vinyl that was limited to 5,555 copies unfortunately is sold out on the website already, but you can still buy the black vinyl (25,000 copies) and the CDs (5,555 copies). The slipmats and some of the clothing are also sold out too, so act fast. You can buy the merch on the official Daft Punk shop here.

Daft Punk broke up in 2021, but with the theatrical release of the film, the party isn't stopping for the fans. Tickets for the film go on sale November 13th, 6 AM PT / 9 AM ET / 2 PM GMT / 3PM CET. You get them here.
