In 2025, Last Ditch opened in Greenfield, Massachusetts. The bar and performing arts venue aimed to provide a safe third-space for the local LGBTQIA+ community. Among its other core values included COVID-consciousness, especially as mask mandates have dwindled to a personal choice matter. Today, it was announced that the venue faces immediate closure if it doesn't find new management.
Last Ditch faced a massive viral controversy in September 2026 after their mask policy was lifted. They typically required attendees to wear a properly fitted KN95 inside the venue. People weren't turned away for not following the policy, but it was strongly recommended.
These policies were placed to focus on immunocompromised and disabled guests, who equally deserved a community space. Unfortunately, their business model proved unsustainable, despite promoting sustainability efforts. After losing a substantial amount of income, Last Ditch made the masking policy completely optional on Saturdays. The results? Viral chaos.
Last Ditch's patrons protested this change, arguing that the venue was reducing its commitment to accessibility hoping for more income. The tension grew as the business faced a common hurdle: economic instability. They confronted the issue by defending a patron who faced harassment. The bar launched a $15,000 fundraiser after disabling social media comments.
Currently, Last Ditch is "soft-closed" for regular operations. Pre-scheduled events, including concerts and drag performances, are expected to continue as planned. However, co-founder Jackie Matellian admitted an alarming $50,000 personal debt contributed to the business' strain.
The issue extends beyond this isolated incident, as now it's increasingly difficult for communities to form outside of online spaces. Last Ditch's struggle proves, if anything, that third spaces are necessary now more than ever.
Today, the bar announced that it was seeking new management, or a permanent sale via Instagram. Of course, ideal candidates would uphold the brand's core values, as they drew the bar's initial audience before the viral controversy. Serious inquiries can contact lastditchvenue@gmail.com.
