Following April’s ‘ambient emo’ album sentiment, claire rousay has shared a new remix of “ily2” by fellow Los Angelian artist Maral as a precursor to a larger remix project dropping on 6 November via Thrill Jockey.
When dreaming up the project, rousay invited friends and other admired musicians and producers to take part, each choosing their own parts of sentiment to work with in recreating the songs. “If these were the only versions of these songs that lived in peoples’ minds, I would be totally okay with that,” says rousay in a press release. “They feel more like collaboration or extensions of the album itself.”
Joining Maral on the album are rousay’s frequent collaborator more eaze, saxophonist Patrick Shiroishi, Gretchen Korsmo, AMULETS, M. Sage, and Andrew Weathers, who mastered the original album.
Explaining her process, rousay says:
“I don't want to tell people what to think about the music. I always wanted the album to be loose or open to interpretation. When I play the album live, I play with different people in each city (like AMULETS guitarist Randall Taylor) and their playing for the shows is all up to their interpretation too. I wanted the record to be a malleable object. There's a lot of song structure to the record so I wanted to find a way (through the ‘remixes’) to make space for other perspectives.”
today i am thrilled to announce the extremely creatively titled, “sentiment remix”. seven unique remixes using material off my latest LP sentiment.
