Charli XCX contributes original songs to upcoming adaptation of 'Wuthering Heights'

This Valentine’s day, Emily Brontë is getting the “brat” treatment. Warner Bros. Pictures have released the first teaser for a new film adaptation of Brontë’s seminal Gothic novel, Wuthering Heights, simultaneously announcing that Charli XCX will be contributing new, original songs to the film’s soundtrack. The film is written, directed, and produced by Emerald Fennell, and stars Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi; it is set to be released February 13, 2026.

The novel, published in 1847 and set at the cusp of regency-era England, tells the story of Catherine Earnshaw and Heathcliff, both residents of Wuthering Heights, who fall in love despite their different economic statuses. When Catherine becomes engaged to a wealthy gentleman befitting of her social class, Heathcliff leaves to find his fortune and win back his beloved. When he does return, Heathcliff’s passion for Catherine manifests in dark and violent ways as he schemes and plots to destroy the Earnshaw family, marry Catherine, and take possession of Wuthering Heights.

It was announced in 2024 that Fennell would be writing and directing an adaptation of Wuthering Heights. The award-winning director has acted in several period pieces, including Anna Karenina and The Danish Girl, and most recently directed the modern Gothic drama, Saltburn. She also won an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay for her debut feature, Promising Young Woman.

In 2024, Margot Robbie was announced to be playing Catherine Earnshaw, and Jacob Elordi was offered the role of Heathcliff, having previously starred in Saltburn.

Charli XCX is contributing original songs to the film, but composer Anthony Willis is composing the film’s score. Willis’s previous work includes composing the scores for Fennell's last two films as well as the cheeky horror film M3GAN.
