Chance the Rapper becomes first independent artist to go Diamond

Chance the Rapper has been fairly quiet over the last few years. Since dropping his "debut" album The Big Day in 2019, the Grammy-winning artist has been slow to drop new music. Any news about him since has mainly concerned his separation from his long-time partner Kirsten Corley.

However, in spite of all this, Chance has recently hit an impressive milestone. "I'm the One", his 2017 song with DJ Khaled, Justin Bieber, Quavo and Lil Wayne, has recently surpassed 10 million sales and stream equivalents in the U.S. This makes Chance the Rapper the first fully independent artist in history to ever go Diamond.

Chance the Rapper is known for breaking institutional boundaries as an artist. In 2017, he became the first independent musician to receive multiple Grammy's in the same year. His 2016 mixtape Coloring Book was the first independently-released, streaming-only album to receive an award from The Recording Academy. This newly-awarded Diamond plaque further cements his legacy as a ceiling-breaking independent artist.

Chance was officially given his Diamond certification on New Year's Eve at the 2025 NHL Winter Classic in Chicago, the rapper's hometown. Upon receiving this unique distinction, Chance shared his thoughts on what it means to him:

"‘I’m the One’ has been such a special record for me since the day we created it. To see this track go Diamond is a testament to the connection it’s made with so many people. Shout out to Khaled, Quavo, Justin, and Wayne! Every time I perform this song, it brings an undeniable energy, and the fans' love for it never wavers. Getting to play it live on New Year’s Eve in front of my hometown crowd, in the greatest city in the world—there’s truly nothing better and I’m beyond thankful!”

Chance went on to perform at the Winter Classic, playing a set of some of his biggest hits including "No Problem", "Cocoa Butter Kisses", and, of course, "I'm the One". You can check out the full performance below.

Chance has recently been teasing an upcoming mixtape entitled Star Line. While few details about this project have been revealed, this newly-awarded Diamond certification is a reminder of what he can accomplish with nothing but a mixtape.
