The rockstar chef life is no joke. Although he is primarily known for his work as a chef, restaurateur, and actor on FX's The Bear, Matty Matheson has always been a hardcore kid at heart. A frequenter of the Ontario hardcore scene, his restaurant Parts and Labor served as a hidden gem of a venue for touring acts, including the likes of Mac DeMarco and Ty Segall. It would only make sense for the chef to return to the hardcore world kicking and screaming with his new band Pig Pen, which includes Canadian greats like Alexisonfire's Wade MacNeil and indie country artist Daniel Romano.
Matheson says that he decided to get together with some old friends and record a quick record: "WE JUST WANTED TO HANGOUT AND SEE WHAT'S UP. THIS IS OUR BAND. WE ARE PIGPEN." The full lineup includes Matty Matheson on vocals (that's him screaming in the Instagram preview), Wade MacNeil on guitar/vocals, brothers Daniel Romano on guitar and Ian Romano on drums, and Tommy Major on bass.
Pig Pen has already announced their first-ever show for April 25 in their home ground of Toronto. The show has already sold out, though – but there is a waitlist for those still eager to go. The group will perform with two Torontonian thrashers, Best Wishes and Pluto’s Kiss.
This is not Matheson's first time cooking with hardcore. In the mid-2010s he had a brief stint fronting the crass Toronto hardcore outfit Sex Tears, while still working as an executive chef.
